With the Tour de Yorkshire sportive just a few short weeks away, riders may well be reaching a state of peak nervousness. As a business proudly founded in the county, the Spin Shed team wanted to share a few brief tips, to help competitors prepare for the big day!
Don’t bite off more than you can chew
The route comes in three distances to cater for all abilities, but each and every one represents a fantastic challenge. To be sharing the same routes as the elite race, on the same day, should provide a brilliant experience for everyone.
Choose the right distance for you, but it’s also important to pace yourself. Eat and drink often, and don’t set out all guns blazing, just because you ‘feel great’ at the start. It’s a long ride, and if you run out of energy, no amount of Jelly Babies will help!
Ahead of the event, ride little but often
It’s probably a good idea to get used to your bike before taking on such a mammoth challenge. You don’t need to be out riding hundreds of miles a week, but a couple of longer rides would probably be beneficial.
There are loads of great, safe, cycle routes around Leeds and Yorkshire. If you’re new to road cycling, why not take to a canal towpath to get used to the feel, in a safe environment.
Revise the route
Take a moment to check out the route. Even if you often drive in the area, biking can often feel very different. That little hill that you barely notice in a car, might seem a bit more like summiting Alp d’Huez on a bike!
Check out where the toughest climbs will appear, and where the best places to stop and take on some food might be. Even a quick check on Google Maps and Street View might be more useful than you think.
Shout it from the roof tops
Many of the competitors will be riding for charity. Shout about your challenge so that people can sponsor you, encourage you and perhaps even share some of the pain! Completing the ride is a fantastic achievement, and you should make sure it’s one that you’re recognised for.
Post a link to your charity or fundraising page on all your usual social channels, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
Get the right kit
Ok, so we should declare a vested interest in this one, as our site brings together a curated range of stylish and independent brands, and you can find great looking cycle clothing to fit your own preference. But the point is a valid one – you won’t perform to your best, unless you’re in clothing you look and feel comfortable in.
The good news is, we’ve set up a unique discount code for Tour de Yorkshire Sportive riders, to get 10% off all our products with code ‘TdY10’. So whether you’re in the market for an extra comfy pair of cycling shorts, a rain jacket, or an super-aero jersey, simply enter the code at checkout. Happy riding!
